Digitising the European industry is one of the priorities of the European Commission, which aims to ‘ensure that any industry in Europe, big or small, wherever situated and in any sector can fully benefit from digital innovations to upgrade its products, improve its processes and adapt its business models to the digital change’.
Digital Innovation Hubs (DIHs) are a key part of the digitization strategy, fostering links between competence centers, industry, technology experts and investors. DIHs can also assist industry in their transformation to digitize their products and productions processes and take advantage of digital opportunities.
In several countries, initiatives are set-up and already running to support the digitization of the industry. These also include initiatives that can be seen as Digital Innovation Hubs. A few examples are shown in the figure below.
On European level, the European Commission has already set up several initiatives to shape the pan-European network of DIHs. One of these initiatives is ICT Innovation for Manufacturing SMEs (I4MS) which aims to establish a Digital Innovation Hub in every European Region.
The 29 proposal selected to prepare Feasibility Studies for Digital Innovation Hubs are part of the European initiative. Supported by the Mentorship Programme, these Digital Innovation Hub projects will enable a more balanced coverage of EU regions by the I4MS initiative.
